- Website prices in South Africa run from under R2 000 to over R150 000. The gap is almost entirely in what is left out.
- A template site is cheap to buy and expensive to own. A bloated agency build is expensive to buy and slow to change.
- For most small and medium businesses, a properly built custom site sits between R6 500 and R30 000.
- Always ask who owns the domain, hosting and files before you pay a deposit.
Web design prices in South Africa: the real range
Ask five web design companies in South Africa what a website costs and you will get five answers between R1 500 and R150 000. All of them can be honest. They are quoting for different things.
The useful question is not "how much does a website cost?" It is "what is included at each price, and what will I pay for later?" This guide breaks that down using the prices we see quoted across Gauteng in 2026, including our own.
The cheapest website is rarely the cheapest one to own.
The three types of website you can buy
1. The template site (roughly R1 000 to R5 000)
A pre-made theme with your logo and text dropped in, often built in a day. It looks acceptable on launch. The problems arrive later: it looks like hundreds of other sites, it usually has no proper SEO setup, and the developer often keeps the domain and hosting in their own name. I wrote about this market in detail in AI Website Design in 2026: Why the R1 000 Website Costs You More.
2. The custom small-business site (roughly R6 500 to R30 000)
Designed for your business, built on a platform you can edit yourself, with local SEO, Google Business Profile setup and lead routing included. This is where most owner-run businesses in Centurion, Pretoria and Midrand get the best return.
3. The legacy agency build (roughly R60 000 to R250 000+)
Large teams, long discovery phases, account managers and heavy custom code. Right for a listed company or a complex platform. For a ten-person business it usually means paying for process you do not need, and a site that is expensive to change once the project team moves on.

Hidden costs nobody quotes
- Domain and hosting. A .co.za domain costs little to register through an accredited registrar listed by the ZA Central Registry. Hosting varies. Make sure both are in your name.
- Plugin and theme licences. Premium plugins renew every year. Ask who pays and whose account they sit on.
- Copywriting and photography. Usually excluded from cheap quotes, and the biggest difference between a site that converts and one that does not. See Brand Photography in 2026.
- Changes after launch. Some developers charge per edit. A self-editable site removes that cost.
- SEO. A site that is not set up for search is a brochure nobody finds. Google's own SEO Starter Guide is a useful baseline to hold any quote against.
- Speed. Slow sites lose mobile visitors. Test any developer's past work on PageSpeed Insights before you hire them.
How weDesiign prices a website
We publish our starting prices because hiding them wastes everyone's time. Our websites start from R6 500 for a Starter site, R14 000 for Business Growth and R28 000 for a custom e-commerce store, excluding VAT, with a 50% deposit to begin and the balance on launch.
Every package includes copywriting guidance, local SEO setup, WhatsApp integration and a month of post-launch support. The domain, hosting and every account are registered in your name. You can see what that looks like in practice in our Fatzebra and Filtaquip Global case studies.
If you are comparing quotes, line them up against the table above and ask each supplier what is excluded. That one question tells you more than the price does.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a basic website cost in South Africa?
A template site can cost under R5 000. A properly designed custom small-business website typically starts around R6 500 and rises with the number of pages, features and integrations.
Why is affordable website design in Centurion so different in price?
Because suppliers include very different things. Some quote only the build. Others include SEO, Google Business setup, copy guidance and support. Compare what is included, not just the total.
What does an e-commerce website cost?
A custom WooCommerce store with a South African payment gateway such as PayFast or Paygate typically starts around R28 000, depending on product count and integrations.
Are there monthly costs after launch?
Hosting, domain renewal and any premium plugin licences recur. Ongoing SEO or maintenance is optional and quoted separately.
Should I pay the full amount upfront?
No. A deposit to begin and the balance on launch is standard. Be cautious of anyone asking for the full amount before design work has started.
